Tutor Recruitment
750 part-time tutors in the East of England help regional students to succeed in their studies and offer personal learning support for the University's courses by providing group tutorials, teaching and assessment and individual contact. Depending on the course, this support is offered locally face-to-face, by correspondence or telephone as well as electronically.
Our tutors are a diverse group of people from all sorts of professional backgrounds and teach OU courses in subject areas such as Maths and Computing, Technology, Science, Law, Accounting, Business, Languages, the Arts etc. The Regional Centre provides them with an induction and Continuing Professional Development Programme.
If you would like to join us and work with enthusiastic adult learners from a wide range of backgrounds, then visit our tutor recruitment website at www.open.ac.uk/employment/tutors or email us at R06-tut@open.ac.uk for further details of current opportunities. We promote diversity in employment and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
Links with your local library
The Open University Library has links with other library services and we maintain a selection of our course materials in the reference section of these public libraries:
- Bedford Central Library
- Cambridge Central Library
- Norwich Central Library
- Ipswich County Library
There is also a county loan service from some regional libraries.
A large number of libraries, community centres and other information centres in the East of England act as Open University local information points, holding prospectuses and other information.
Open for Business
The Open University in the East of England works with around 1500 regional organisations per year and can help organisations in the following ways:
- A supply of up-to-date information on all our courses.
- Continuing professional development.
- Research and development.
- E-learning content, delivery and consultancy.
- Collaborative teaching with organisations in the health sector.
We are also actively involved in the i10 partnership — see www.i10.org.uk — which brings together ten universities in the East of England to offer inspiration, resources and know-how to support the growth of businesses and the economic, social and environmental development of the region through innovation.
Contribution to Widening Participation in education
The Open University aims to make Higher Education accessible to people unable to pursue the traditional routes to university study.
Aim Higher
The Open University works with partners in Universities, colleges, schools and guidance services across the East of England on the government-funded Aimhigher outreach programme. One initiative involves working with schools and communities to stimulate young people's aspirations and to help realise ambitions so that many more people consider the option of studying at higher education level.
The Open University's regional centre is also the base for an Aimhigher initiative to benefit disabled young people across the East of England. The project will support school and college students as they consider the option of higher education by publishing relevant information and profiles of current students from universities in the region.
Overcoming social exclusion through on-line learning
We are working with the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) on a Community Fund research project on overcoming social exclusion through online learning. This project is investigating the potential of online learning for overcoming some of the barriers that socially or economically disadvantaged adults encounter when accessing learning. It aims to identify the factors that influence participation and successful completion in relation to such learners.
